Become a Disaster Service Worker Disasters create terrible consequences, forcing people out of their homes into temporary shelters and closing down communities.  While productive individuals sit idle in shelters, or even move away, local building inspectors struggle to evaluate building safety in hundreds or thousands of damaged structures.  Experience in dealing with earthquakes reveals that, due to non-structural damage, the number of total inspections can be more than three times the number of red-tagged and yellow-tagged buildings.  Threats also exist from other natural and man-made disasters, including floods, hurricanes, and explosions.  Most building departments do not have the ability to perform multitudes of such inspections in a short period of time, so a strong need exists to have a cadre of trained professionals available to assist local governments, along with a program to manage this cadre.  Trainers:  Sudi Shoja, P.E., F.ASCE, Certified SAP Trainer For the past 25 years, Sudi has been responding to earthquake events locally and internationally. She is a certified trainer and presents nationally on emergency management topics. She is the chair of EM Committee for APWA San Diego Chapter and ASCE OC & LA chapters and serves on several safety councils for school districts and other groups. She is a former City Engineering and the  current Principal of Engineering Solutions Services(ESS). Larry Pierce, P.E., Certified Evaluator Mr. Lawrence (Larry) D. In 2012, he led a year long team effort for the San Diego ASCE Section developing its 2012 San Diego County Infrastructure Report Card. Mr. Pierce has made numerous requested Report Card  presentations to agencies and engineering groups. He is part of the National ASCE team for the introduction of newly released ASCE National 2013 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure.
