Synopsis:    The Irvine Ranch Water District's (IRWD) Michelson Water Recycling Plant (MWRP) currently operates at a recycled water production of 20 million gallons per day (MGD), with a system capacity of 28 MGD.  The treatment facilities include screening and grit removal, primary sedimentation, traditional activated sludge and dual media filtration followed by hypochlorite disinfection, and a membrane bioreactor followed by ultraviolet disinfection. IRWD's recycled water is used for landscape irrigation as well as toilet flushing in high-rise building and some industrial process water.   In 2009, IRWD started a $90,000,000 expansion of MWRP's recycled water production capacity by adding a 10 MGD membrane bioreactor (MBR).  The new, parallel process train includes a new headworks, fine screens, and the MBR followed by ultraviolet disinfection.  A variety of equipment vendors were involved in the project, primarily the MBR vendor, GE Power & Water (the membrane supplier formerly known as Zenon). After completion of construction, the MBR treatment process was thoroughly tested and commissioned, and has been in operation since early 2014.   This presentation will discuss the selection of MBR technology, including pre-selection and purchase of the membrane equipment, a description of the IRWD MBR facility, and lessons learned for use by other agencies, consulting engineers, and equipment vendors considering installation of an MBR for recycled water production.
