He has been with Harris & Associates for over 15 years serving as the Irvine office’s Design Manager/Director of Engineering Services, during which time he has designed several ASCE/APWA award winning projects including the Sunset Strip Beautification Project in West Hollywood, the McCarrell Canyon Storm Drain Project in Rancho Palos Verdes, the Esplanade Improvement Project in Redondo Beach and most recently the San Ramon Canyon Storm Drain Project in Rancho Palos Verdes. Randy also has a long history of service to the ASCE OC Branch, starting as Student Chapter President at CSU Fullerton in 1983, then as Fullerton’s Contact Member and as Student Activities Chair (serving CSUF, UCI and CSULB) over a 14 year period. Randy then ultimately on the OC Branch Board of Directors, where he had the honor of serving as the Branch President in 2002 when the Branch was celebrating its 50th Anniversary and ASCE National was celebrating its 150th anniversary. Synopsis:  Discover the challenges and the innovations associated with a $17.7 million storm drain project along San Ramon Canyon in the city of Rancho Palos Verdes. The adjacent active Tarapaca Landslide was feeding debris into the canyon which large rain events transported to 25th Street below. The repeating cycle put more than 250 homes in harm’s way downstream and threatened access to both 25th Street and Palos Verdes Drive East (PVDE) Switchbacks. The Harris Team developed an innovative solution that required two tunnels and a gravity buttress design to divert the collected stormwater to the ocean at the bottom of the coastal bluffs, relieve a deficient drainage system downstream, and stabilize an active landslide.
