Consequently, technical engineers can have trouble communicating the results and nuances of technical studies. Typical trends in conveying technical results include color graphics, such as 2-D plots, or even 2-D animations, but recent projects suggest that more advanced approaches are needed. Two case studies from RBF show how using 3D animation can be more powerful than using traditional graphics. Case Study 1) City of Redlands - Urban area 3D animation of 1.3 miles of combined detailed 1D/2D XPSWIMM modeling results. Model of 100-year storm, existing condition. Case Study 2) World Trade Center (NY) – 100 year hurricane storm surge with expected sea-level-rise in response to Hurricane Sandy floods lower Manhattan and the new WTC. RBF was contracted to perform a detailed 2D analysis of the surface and subsurface flooding. XPSWMM 2D was used on the surface and XPSWMM 1D for six levels of subsurface infrastructure. Both scenarios were prepared in 3D animation.
