Prado dam provides flood control and water conservation for communities in Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The tour will be given by Thomas Bucklew, Project manager for the Sana Ana River Mainstream Flood Risk Management Project and Robert Kwan, project design engineer for Prado Dam Modifications. The tour will be taking place on Thursday, July 24th. We will be meeting at Ridgeline Park (2850 Ridgeline Dr, Corona, CA) for lunch at 11:30 am. After lunch we will be heading to the Prado Dam Visiting Center (2400 Auto Center Dr, Corona, CA). About Prado Dam: Prado Dam is the primary dam for the lower half of the Santa Ana River, as said by the Orange County Public Works. The building of Prado Dam was authorized in 1936, and in 1938 ironically, there was a major flood along the river. This further enforced the building of the dam. In 1941 marked the complete construction of the dam by the Corps of Engineers. In 2005, Prado Dam underwent a renovation project that cost $420 million. This project was done to accommodate a large volume of water by raising the embankment by 28 feet and raising the spillway by 25 feet. Prado Dam was built to be the primary flood control dam for the entire Santa Ana River Watershed, and was the only one until Seven Oaks Dam was built 30 miles upstream above Redlands. The dam sits in western Riverside County near the Route 71-Route 91 interchange just outside Corona. Because of this location, Prado Dam is really the savior of Orange County since it holds the water back from screaming down into populous Orange County. Prado dam is a major component of the Santa Ana Mainstream Project, which extends from the upper canyon in the San Bernardino Mountains downstream to the Pacific Ocean at Newport Beach.
