He has been a practicing civil design engineer in Southern California for 34 years with over a dozen years in the private sector. His current projects include  the Santa Ana-Delhi Channel Regional Trash Facility, the Big Canyon Nature Park Restoration Program, the Marine Avenue storm drain pump station and drainage system on Balboa Island, and the Arches Storm Drain diversion to prevent bacteria from entering the turning basin in Newport Bay. Bob has a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Irvine and is a resident of Laguna Beach.   Synopsis:  Restoration planning for Big Canyon Began almost 20 years ago. In 2008, with a final design for the Big Canyon Nature Park nearing completion, high concentrations of selenium were detected in Big Canyon Creek. The proposed restoration project was put on hold. This presentation will first trace the forensic steps taken to identify selenium sources and develop a work plan to implement mitigation projects. This followed by a case study of the Big Canyon Nature Park Phase 1 Restoration Project, a key project in Big Canyon that implemented a double diversion to deal with the selenium issue. This newly constructed project includes an infiltration wetland sized for a 100-year storm event, creek bypass with outlet into a serpentine bioswale, groundwater flow diversion of high-concentration selenium seeps to the sanitary sewer, creek stabilization using vegetated soil revetments, engineered energy dissipation with dual-direction groundwater streamline, flood plain creation, and habitat creation.  The presentation concludes with a brief overview of the concept planning to integrate the Phase 1 project with the proposed downstream Phase 2 project. The Phase 2 project will implement a native-plant habitat mosaic to replace the invasive pepper tree forest. The new plant palette will be selected to be resistant to the Polyphagous Shothole Borer, an invasive beetle that has infested large areas of Los Angeles and Orange Counties. The project will be designed to accommodate projected sea level rise and evaluate options for dealing with a failed freshwater mitigation lake that is now one of the most prolific mosquito breeding areas in the County.   Time: Lunch @ 11:50 am; Program ends @ 1:00 pm Location: Dave and Busters' at Irvine Spectrum, 661 Spectrum Center Drive, Irvine, CA (949) 727-0555 Cost: $45 at the door, $35 advanced payment by mail, PayPal or credit card, $40 registered but pay at the door, Students $15 at the door with school ID For PayPal payment, please send payment to: HHTG_OC@yahoo.com Mail checks payable to "ASCE HHTG" and RSVP to: Jenny Robinet, EWRI Treasurer 17520 Newhope Street, Suite 200, Fountain Valley, CA 92708 Confirm: Call (714) 481-7238, or e-mail to: asceocewri@gmail.com   This event has a Google Hangouts video call.
