Details TOPIC - Panama Canal Expansion's Cellular Cofferdam Structures for Borinquen Dam The ASCE Orange County Branch invites you to attend the June Luncheon featuring Richard Morales, Director of Engineering - Construction Projects at LB Foster, for a presentation on the Panama Canal Expansion's Cellular Cofferdam Structures for Borinquen Dam.  The sustained increase in international trade created new demand for efficient transportation worldwide and necessitated an historic event, the expansion of the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal expansion presents us with many new challenges and opportunities for growth. The United States and North America continue to formulate plans for infrastructure improvements that will optimize its intermodal system route for the accessibility of our ports to handle this increased traffic generated by the Canal’s $5.3B investment in new state-of-the-art locks, wider access channels and deepening of the existing waterway. Now the canal accommodates ultra-large intermodal ships traveling from Asia to the East Coast and Gulf of Mexico. These Post-Panamax vessels, have 2.5 times the cargo capacity of the current container ships that navigate the Canal. All major expansion work was completed by world renowned construction and dredging companies to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the original Canal opening. That same long-term vision of those who built the Panama Canal one hundred years ago still applies today. We were witness to the successful opening of the Canal into the 21st Century allowing goods to travel in a much shorter period of time through this great waterway. The Panama Canal Authority, better known as the ACP, efficiently manages the movements of goods and services since it took over full time administration in 1999. This presentation will provide engineering background and a complete progression of this monumental work with specific insight on design and construction of the 58 cellular cofferdam structures successfully completed for the Borinquen Dam. Over one mile of sheet piling cells were installed as the base for the Borinquen Dam which elevated and separated the new Pacific Access Channel from the existing Canal in just 5 months. The water level on the new channel is 9 meters above the current Canal between Miraflores and Pedro Miguel Locks.  About The Speaker:  Richard Morales, M.Sc, P.E., F.
