Details | Teach 2nd grade students about civil engineering and earthquakes with a fun lego building and "shake table" activity! Volunteers will each present on 1-2 disciplines of civil engineering during a 10-minute powerpoint and then encourage and talk to students while they build lego structures in groups. Lastly, we will test each lego structure on a "shake table" made of two boards with bouncy balls in between, held together with rubber bands. 1-2 additional volunteers are needed (there will be 3-4 total). Volunteers can be engineering students and/or working professionals. Dress is business casual. Park on the street in front of the school and check in at the office. More information will be sent out a week before the event. Approximate schedule: 7:30 – volunteers arrive to check in with front office 7:45 – 8 powerpoint 8-8:05 questions 8:05-8:25 build 8:25-8:45 test structures 8:45-8:55 pictures of towers 8:55-9:30 additional cleanup, buffer time Please contact k-12chairs at k-12chairs@asceoc.org for any questions.
