Details Topic: Extremes are Extremely Interesting: The Use of Extreme Value Distributions to Assess Water Quality Trends and Management Efficacy in Southern California Speakers: Stanley B. Grant, PhD, Professior of Environmental of Environmental Engineering, Director of UCI Water PIRE, Director of UC Stormwater Initiative, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of California, Irvine  Stanley Grant is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (primary) and Chemical Engineering and Materials Science (courtesy) at the University of California, Irvinei. He received his B.S. with distinction in Geology from Stanford University in 1985; and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering Science (with a minor in Applied Biology) in 1989 and 1992, respectively, from the California Institute of Technology. His professional interests include human and ecosystem water security, coastal and drinking water quality, and environmental fate and transport modeling. Synopsis:  Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distributions have found widespread use of quantifying the probability of extreme events, including earthquacks, floods, and drought. They can also account for non-stationary processes, such changes in the size of the 100-year storm under climate change. Here I talk about the use of GEV distributions to answer two important questions facing water quality managers in Southern California and beyond: (1) how do extremes in stream flow impact water quality in downstream estuaries? (2) how do extremes in recreational beach water quality respond to coastal infrastructure investment, such as sewer line repairs? Overall, I hope to convince you that the analysis of extremes is extremely important, particularly in regions (like Southern California) where climate change may fundamentally alter the driving forces responsible for inland and coastal water quality.   Time: Lunch @ 11:50 am; Program ends @ 1:00 pm Location: Dave and Busters' at Irvine Spectrum, 661 Spectrum Center Drive, Irvine, CA (949) 727-0555 Cost: $45 at the door, $35 advanced payment by mail, PayPal or credit card, $40 registered but pay at the door, Students $15 at the door with school ID For PayPal payment, please send payment to: HHTG_OC@yahoo.com Mail checks payable to "ASCE HHTG" and RSVP to: Jenny Robinet, EWRI Treasurer 17520 Newhope Street, Suite 200, Fountain Valley, CA 92708 Confirm: Call (714) 481-7238, or e-mail to: asceocewri@gmail.com
