| Details | TOPIC - Collaborating to Conquer: Design Challenges of La Pata Avenue Extension Project The ASCE Orange County Branch would like to invite you to attend the June Luncheon Meeting with a presentation on the design challenges of La Pata Avenue Extension Project. San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano and Orange County officials waited more than 50-years to provide a link between the two cities. La Pata Avenue was extended from its current northern terminus at the county’s Prima Deschecha landfill in San Juan Capistrano to San Clemente, just past Calle Saluda, where the road is called Avenida La Pata. Officials from the three government bodies all noted the length of time the project had been in the planning stages. The plan was initially put on the county’s Transportation Master Plan in 1963. La Pata Avenue began as an access road to the landfill in 1970. In San Clemente Avenida La Pata was in the 1982 General Plan and Talega and Forster Ranch specific plans. Passing through a county landfill, four-lane Avenida La Pata carves through 2.27 miles of rugged terrain to connect San Juan Capistrano directly with San Clemente, offering motorists a traffic alternative to I-5. The $127 million road took more than two years to build, moving 13 million cubic yards of dirt and digging up 866,000 cubic yards of trash that had to be relocated in the Prima Deshecha Landfill to clear the route. Since its opening in 2016 the La Pata Avenue Extension Project in Orange County, California has been recognized with top industry honors, including the following: The Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) Southern Ca lifornia Chapter 2017 Design Quality Partner Award for Projects $51 - $100 Million. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Orange County Branch 2017 Project of The Year Award. The Orange County Engineering Council (OCEC) 2017 Engineering Project Achievement Award. The American Public Works Association (APWA) Southern California Chapter 2016 BEST Award for a Regional Transportation Project. It also claimed the #2 spot on the Roads & Bridges 2016 Top 10 Roads list and was featured on the coveted front cover of the publication, reaching over 61,000 print subscribers. Speaker: Carl Taylor, P.E., LEED AP Carl Taylor is a Professional Civil Engineer with over 40 years of experience in project design, management and construction support. He has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley; and a Masters of Divinity. Carl’s project experience includes arterial highways and local streets; national cemeteries and military bases; transportation maintenance and operations facilities; storm drains and multi-purpose water quality/flood control basins; regional, local, neighborhood, city and county parks and open spaces; riding, hiking, pedestrian and bicycle trails and bridges; neighborhood and regional retail centers, and industrial parks; university campuses and theme parks; and planned communities and residential neighborhoods. He has provided and overseen engineering design for major grading projects totaling approximately 100 million cubic yards of earthmoving. ASCE, APWA, CMAA, OCEC, and ULI have bestowed awards on some of the projects in which he had a significant role. One of his projects which is particularly significant to Carl personally, is OC Public Works’ La Pata Avenue Extension Project, which ASCE Orange County Branch recently honored as Project of the Year.
