Details TOPIC - Technical Tour of the Tustin Hangar The ASCE Orange County Branch would like to invite you to attend the May luncheon and Technical Tour of the south Tustin Hangar, located at the northeast corner of Warner Ave and Tustin Ranch Rd. The Hangar at the former Marine Corps Air Station in Tustin measures 1,072 feet long by 292 feet wide, and 192 feet tall. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated National Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks. Built in 1942 of Oregon Douglas fir, it is among the largest freestanding wooden structures in the world. The two twin blimp hangars in Tustin have stood tall since World War II and was a home port to enormous zeppelins and fleets of helicopters that were being prepared for war. The blimps housed there were used as sentries during WWII, armed with machine guns, bombs and charges to fend off submarines. The base was decommissioned in 1949 and reactivated in 1951 in response to the Korean conflict, according to historical county records. It became the country's first military airfield dedicated solely to helicopter operations, which were being heavily used to move troops and supplies. The base was used again during the Vietnam War and finally closed in 1991. City of Tustin staff will be providing the tour of the Tustin Hangar. Lunch will be provided following the tour. Volunteers will be present to direct attendees to parking area south of the hangar.
