Details The levee failures in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina raised awareness of the huge consequences that can result from levee failures, and the potential for huge consequences from Bay Delta levee failures has focused money and effort towards mitigating this hazard in California. In the Delta there are over 1000 km of waterways hemmed by poorly engineered and poorly maintained levees that protect land largely below sea level. To compound the problem there is a high likelihood of seismic activity that can load these levees dynamically. This presentation will reflect on lessons learned from the New Orleans failures and ongoing research focused on improving methods for identifying and quantifying risk in the Delta levee system. Robb Eric S. Moss, Ph.D. and P.E., is currently an assistant professor at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Areas of expertise include geotechnical earthquake engineering, engineering seismology, and risk and reliability with respect to earthquake engineering. Robb has four years of consulting experience involving seismic geotechnics of onshore and offshore projects around the world.
