Details The John T. Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies at Cal Poly Pomona takes a comprehensive look at environmental challenges as they relate to water, food, energy, the natural and the built environment. Their mission is to advance our understanding of environmentally sustainable living through education, research, community outreach and demonstration. The 16-acre living laboratory is truly a hidden gem, which serves as a model for Southern California and beyond by demonstrating. A tour of the Lyle Center will begin our Sustainability Symposium. Sean P. Vargas from Psomas will give an overview of the Envision™ planning and rating tool using the case study of the South Los Angeles Wetland Park, which has been given an Envision™ platinum rating, the highest possible. Vargas was project executive for the Park, the first and only city project to go through the Envision™ process. Psomas is a founding member of ISI and played a key role in the development of Envision™ Dr. Maryam Shafahi from Cal Poly will follow with a presentation on aquaponics. California is facing its most severe drought emergency in decades while more than 70% of its water consumption is attributed to agriculture. This state needs more low-demand and water-efficient agriculture systems to overcome its long-term water crisis. Aquaponics is an eco-friendly system for food production utilizing aquaculture and hydroponics to cultivate fish and crop without soil. Parking available on-site with permit only. Permits can be purchased for $5 at various pay stations located on the main campus. For additional information, contact Cody Briggs at (310) 341-5858 or click here to view Event Flyer.
