I-405 Improvement Project

Award

Transportation Project

Description

The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) , in cooperation with the California Department of Transportation, improved 16 miles of the Interstate 405 (I-405) between State Route 73 and Interstate 605.  The $2.2 billion I-405 Improvement Project added one general purpose lane in each direction, consistent with OCTA’s Measure M sales tax measure, and also added an additional lane in each direction that combined with the existing carpool lane to provide dual express lanes in each direction, otherwise known as the 405 Express Lanes.  As part of the project, 18 bridges were replaced that included improvements to active transportation modes via new sidewalks and bike lanes in both directions on the new bridges.  This ambitious project on one of the nation’s most congested freeways served as the largest highway construction project in the state.
